Artist Statement “This painting was created in honour of the Canadian airborne soldiers whose courage and sacrifice helped protect the freedoms we enjoy today. A parachute descending over an open field is a simple image, but to me it carries a much deeper meaning. The parachute represents courage, the willingness to step into the unknown. While the quiet field below represents the peace and freedom that their service helped make possible. I wanted to capture a moment between the sky and the earth, a moment of uncertainty, courage, and hope. The open landscape reminds us that freedom can sometimes feel ordinary, yet it has never been free. I am honoured to donate this painting in support of Canadian veterans, as a small gesture of gratitude and remembrance for those who served, those who sacrificed, and those who continue to carry their stories forward.” Peter Cheung – October 2026 Artist Bio Born in Hong Kong and now residing in Burlington, Ontario, Peter Cheung is a dynamic Canadian Artist and father of a Canadian veteran. Cheung’s journey into the world of art began under the tutelage of a renowned Chinese painting master, where he honed his skills in the delicate art of ink and water painting. Over time, he seamlessly integrated the swift and robust brushwork of Chinese painting into his western oils and watercolours, creating an aesthetic unique to him. He believes that good art should allow the viewer to look ‘into’ it rather than just ‘at’ it. This philosophy is a fundamental part of his artistic approach. Cheung’s work is designed to create a connection with the viewer, allowing them to experience the energy, life force, and movement encapsulated within each piece. Cheung is a highly acclaimed artist known for his diverse portfolio, including textbook illustrations, juror of art shows and engaging public painting classes. His work showcases exceptional versatility. He is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artist and winner of numerous competition awards, Peter is currently represented by Mountain Galleries Banff, Jasper & Whistler, PWD Gallery Waterloo and Burlington Art gallery.
