“Canadian Coast to Coast” was created by Perley Health Resident and 94-year-old Royal Canadian Air Force Veteran Allan Gravelle.
Artist Statement
Allan’s helmet is a celebration of Canada’s diverse landscapes and cultural heritage. The design incorporates iconic imagery from across the country, including the mountains of British Columbia and Alberta, the wheat fields of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Niagara Falls in Ontario, Québec’s Gaspé Peninsula, and the Inukshuk representing the Northwest Territories. Together, these elements reflect Allan’s appreciation for Canada’s natural beauty, geography, and regional identity.
Artist Bio
Allan was born in Sarnia, Ontario, in 1931. At the age of 21, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), beginning a 12-year military career.
While stationed in Rivers, Manitoba, Allan was posted to 3rd Fighter Wing in Germany. During his time there, he attended school part-time, travelling with the local children on the school bus, and successfully completed Grade 13.
Upon returning to Canada, Allan continued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Queen’s University, followed by a Master’s degree in Engineering from Carleton University.
Allan spent four years at RCAF Station Uplands in Ottawa, where he worked with the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE). One of his most significant projects involved the development and testing of new rocket-assisted ejection seats for fighter aircraft. The testing was highly successful and represented an important contribution to aviation safety and engineering.
Although Allan was released from the RCAF in 1968, he continued his professional career at Uplands and later worked for Computing Devices in Bells Corners, Ontario.
Now 94, Allan resides at Perley Health in Ottawa. A lifelong learner and creative spirit, he was once a student of renowned Canadian artist Robert Bateman. Allan continues to explore his artistic talents through painting, woodworking, and pottery. His creative work reflects the same curiosity, precision, and appreciation for Canada that have shaped his life and career.
